The Value of Chaos??

Mar 21, 2007

There is a new book coming out in a few weeks that may be an interesting read.  It's called "A Perfect Mess: The Hidden Benefits of Disorder".  The authors make a case for the creative power of disorder.  They feel that organizational efforts tend to close off systems to random, unplanned influences that might lead to breakthroughs, as was the case when Alexander Fleming accidentally left a culture plate smeared with Staphylococcus bacteria on his lab bench while he went on a two-week holiday, and a spore of Penicillium notatum drifted in and landed on the uncovered plate.  Thus penicillin was born!

Companies that encompass "discovery" sciences constantly struggle with the seemingly innate business need to manage and control the rate of discovery innovation, when many would argue (as do the authors of this book) that the more "organized" a discovery process is, the less productive it will be.

The book also points out that not all successful people are highly organized.  None other than the Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, refuses to run his day by a schedule and takes visitors and attends meetings on-the-fly!

Give it a try!  It might be the beginning of your climb up the corporate ladder!
